Bruce was also an athlete in college football and international track and field competitions. In 1928 he won the silver medal for shot put at the Olympics in Amsterdam.
He was acting for more than 40 years. He was raised in Tacoma Washington. His father owned several logging camps and was a lumberman. Maybe this is why he was good at playing Tarzan.
In 1926 he played in Rose Bowl college football at University of Washington. He won 4 consecutive AAU shot put titles, the NCAA in 1927, and the AAU indoor titles twice.
He moved to LA after competing in the athletic club and became friends with Douglas Fairbanks (actor).
Bruce broke his shoulder filming 1931 film touchdown. So, the Tarzan part was replaced by swimming champion Johhny Weissmuller.
