In many older Compaq designs, expansion cards didn't plug directly into the motherboard. Instead, the motherboard plugged into a riser/backplane (the board with many long slots).
ISA Slots: The long black slots are for legacy Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) cards (sound cards, modems).
